Planning is underway for 2024
Come join the ALYC Dive and Snorkel Team members on Wednesday April 24th to hear first hand as they share their experiences and excitement after spending two weeks on the island of Vanua Levu, Fiji. You’ll have an opportunity see some of the nearly 1000 fantastic photos collected above and below the waves after two weeks of diving and exploring. There is one final opportunity to take advantage of a week diving in paradise at world class dive sites originally chartered by Jacques Cousteau and this meeting just might entice you to join the in on the fun and adventure during the last week of May. Come find out if this adventure is for you. We will also be talking about some upcoming group events you will want to participate in. We will begin by sharing a meal, off the menu, and trading stories at 4:30pm and them move into the main hall at 6:30pm for a pre-dive brief followed by diving into the meeting and then taking a surface interval and rehydrating at the bar. Please register online on the ALYC website calendar so we know how many tables and chairs to set up and prepare the kitchen staff. Hope to see you there!
Members are welcome.
You can register by visiting their website at www.nosa.org.

For those of you new to handicapped sailboat racing or if you need just a little refresher, this is for you. Bring your boat for a fun-filled day of racing in Newport Bay.
We will meet at the American Legion Yacht Club for basic review of the “Racing Rules of Sailing” and an overview of how to manage your way around a racecourse, then out to the water for some straightforward races around buoys and marks in Newport Harbor. Put your boat away and it’s back to ALYC for some photos, food, prizes and conversation.
Getting started in sailboat racing is fun and exciting, but it can be a little intimidating, so as an added benefit we have a limited number of Mentors available to help you gain the skills and confidence needed to enjoy the competition. Mentors will be available on a first come first served basis.
Each attendee will receive a complimentary copy of US Sailing’s “Sailors Guide to the Racing Rules of Sailing” as well as a handy decal guide to the Signal Flags used in conducting a sailboat race.
For a Mentor or for further questions,
please contact Scott Barnes at race@alyc.com

History
The annual Sail for the Blind and Visually Impaired (SVI) has grown to become one of the most important and well attended philanthropic events in Newport Harbor. Each year many blind or visually impaired guests and their escorts spend a day sailing with volunteers from the American Legion Yacht Club and other area yacht clubs. There are over 150 volunteers acting as sailing skippers, crew, escorts to and from the docks, meal servers, check-in personnel, marina control, parking assignment, and other positions.
SVI had humble beginnings, starting in 1990, when Bonnie Gibson and Bobbie Reed of the Women's Sailing Association - Orange County (WSA-OC) took 15 blind people sailing on a 40-foot sailboat. A year later, in 1991, American Legion Yacht Club (ALYC) Commodore J.T. Tarwater established ALYC and Post 291 as the host for SVI. Commodore Tarwater’s legacy continues today as the ALYC not only continues to host, but also manages the organization and leadership of SVI.
ALYC is proud of our legacy as the host of SVI and delighted to lead this event. As always, SVI is one of the highlights on our annual calendar.

I assume any risk of injury arising out of my participation in this event, failure or breakage of the yacht sailed on or any of its equipment, or weather conditions.
